Newport, RI – The 51st edition of the Thrash to the Onion Patch better known as the Newport to Bermuda will commence on Friday June 15th. The biennial race is coming off a record-shattering event in 2016 when Team Comanche destroyed the existing record in an astonishing 34 hours 42 minutes and 53 seconds. The race to St. David’s Lighthouse is a 635-mile jaunt across the Atlantic that was founded in 1906. It is one of just two of the world’s regularly scheduled races held out of sight of land. The other is the Transpac Race which is also a Goslings Sponsored event.
The Newport to Bermuda attracts sailors from around the globe even thought it is sometimes considered a New England event. Up to 200 boats compete for not only the opportunity to receive a tray of Dark ‘n Stormies on the Bermuda dock but also for the stern test that the race has to offer to any sailor.
Goslings Rums of Bermuda has been an integral part of the history of the Newport to Bermuda. Way back in years past, sailors once completing their trek to Bermuda would bring barrels of Goslings Rum on their return voyage. The festivities kick off June 13th at the Goslings Rum Newport Shipyard Crew Party. Good luck to all competitors and we’ll see you in Bermuda.
