ICONIC SAILING COMPETITION MAKES MARITIME HISTORY IN CHICAGO JUNE 10-12

AMERICA’S CUP TO HOST ITS FIRST-EVER FRESHWATER RACE ON LAKE MICHIGAN

Thousands of spectators expected to watch from land and on water; Navy Pier to serve The America’s Cup and Chicago will make maritime history when the preeminent international sailing event comes to town June 10-12, and holds its first-ever freshwater competition on Lake Michigan.

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Chicago, a qualifying event for the 2017 America’s Cup in Bermuda, will take place June 10 – 12, 2016 at Navy Pier. Six teams will be competing, including ORACLE TEAM USA, Emirates Team New Zealand, SoftBank Team Japan, Groupama Team France, Land Rover BAR (for Great Britain), and Artemis Racing (for Sweden).

Navy Pier will be the epicenter of the event, with entertainment for the whole family, live music and air shows. The start and finish line will be in the water right off of the Grand Ballroom & East End Plaza.

All official media activities – including an opening press conference – will begin on Thursday, June 9.

Thursday, June 9

8:00 AM

Boats Launched into Lake Michigan for Very First Time
Location: Navy Pier North Dock by Entrance 1

  • Photo opportunity will include backdrop of Chicago skyline

10:00 AM

Local Students Learn Fundamentals of Sailing with America’s Cup Endeavour Program Event
Location:
Navy Pier

  • Local schoolchildren will learn the basics of sailing on Lake Michigan, as part of the AC Endeavour Program
  • Children will sail on Hobie Wave catamaran boats donated by the AC Endeavour Program and partners, each boat designed to represent one of six teams in the Chicago sports community (Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs, Fire, Sky, and White Sox)

Opening Press Conference
Location: Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier / ACWS Chicago Media Check-in at Entrance 2

  • Skippers from all teams will participate in an opening press conference and be available for interviews

5:00-6:00 PM

Media Stand-Ups on the Water
Location: Navy Pier

  • Media is invited to do live or pre-taped stand-ups from Navy Pier, surrounded by set-up for the sailing activity

Friday, June 10 / “Conquer Cancer Day”

7:00 AM

Media Stand-Ups on the Water and Tours of the Boats
Location: Navy Pier

  • Media is invited to get an up-close look at the competition sailboats, as they moor at Navy Pier
  • Team representatives will be available for interview to describe the boats, and what spectators can expect to see throughout the weekend activities

Saturday, June 11 (Day One of Competition)

  • Team skippers will provide public remarks and briefings from the outdoor stage at the race village before racing begins
